‘Comardes: Almost A Love Story’ is a love and friendship story of a man and a woman from China who are exiled in Hong Kong and New York to realize their dream during 10 years. Li Xiao-Jun(Leon Lai) arrive by the train from China in a strange city Hong Kong and the film begins by the scene he takes the escalator and disappears in the sunlight with gloomy.

“Comardes: Almost A Love Story” is the story unfold from 1986 to 1996. The background of the movie was 80’s. 80’s was Chinese reform and opening policy period. Many Chinese mainlanders move into Hong Kong as workers. Li Xiao-Jun is also one of these the migrant workers. Hong Kong is a stange city for Li Xiao-Jun. Even language of Hong Kong is unfamiliar for Li Xiao-Jun. He speaks Mandarin. But in Hong Kong, Cantonese and English are used as official languages.

Nevertheless, crowded streets of Hong Kong make him sing. He sings on his bicycle hanging chickens on his bicycle to deliver in spite of hard labor. Because he has a dream in Hong Kong. Because he believe in realizing his dream in the land of opportunity.

And another reason, he has a friend, Li Qiao(Maggie Cheung). Li Xiao-Jun has become with Li Qiao(Maggie Cheung) who ia mainlander as well. He feels intimacy to her. Li Qiao has a dream of becoming a rich in Hong Kong. She works very hard. Both are between two people. They depend on one another in a strange place. And there is subtle emotions between friendship and love from both sides.

Sweet but the harsh city, Hong Kong
The songs of taiwanese singer Teresa Teng play a main role in ‘Comrades: Almost A Love Story’. The title of the movie is the title of Teresa Teng’s song. Li Xian-Jun and Li Qiao love Teresa Teng’songs. What they love Teresa Teng’s songs says their identity as mainlanders. Because the singer Teresa Teng was loved absolutely by Chinese mainlanders. Li Qiao sings a song of Teresa Teng on Li Xian-Jun’s bicycle in Canton Road in Hong Kong. At that instant, their hard life of migrant workers disappear temporarily.

Li Qiao has worked very hard to succeed. But she is in debt seriously because she failed to invest in stocks. She begins to work in a massage shop to pay off the debt. It is the life is too bitter for her in this city. Finally she decides to break the relation with Li Xian-Jun. Because Li Xian-Jun has fiancé in the mainland and she feels an anxiety about her life after losing all she has. She says “I do not know where to go.”

One more time, in an alien city New York City
Li Qiao and Li Xiao-Jun love each other, but they strayed apart. They move into New York. Although they live under the same sky of the city, they have not being met each other. And one day in Chinatown, New York, Li Xiao-Jun and Li Qiao fatefully meet each other in front of an electronics shop. They are listening to the news of the singer Teresa Teng’s death. They meet finally after wandering from Hong Kong and to New York.

두 도시 속 사랑 이야기, 영화 ‘첨밀밀’
‘첨밀밀’은 중국 대륙에서 꿈을 찾아 홍콩과 뉴욕을 유랑하는 두 남녀의 10년간의 우정과 사랑을담은 장만옥, 여명 주연의 진가신 감독이 메가폰을 잡은 영화이다. 열차를 타고 낯선 도시인 홍콩에 여소군(여명)이 도착하고, 암울한 음악과 함께 에스칼레이터를 타고 빛 속으로 사라지는 그의 모습으로 영화는 시작된다.
‘첨밀밀’은 86년부터 96년까지 10년동안 이어지는 두 남녀의 사랑과 우정을 그린 영화다. 영화의 배경인 80년대는 중국의 개혁개방정책이 한참이던 시기로 당시 많은 중국본토인들이 홍콩으로 이주노동자로 건너간다.

여소군 또한 대륙에서 건너 온 이주노동자들 중 한 명으로 광동어와 영어를 사용하는 홍콩은 중국표준어를 사용하는 그에게 너무도 낯선 타국 일뿐이다. 그럼에도 북적대는 홍콩의 거리는 그를 노래하게 한다. 배달할 닭을 줄줄이 매단 자전거를 타고 달리면서 고된 노동에도 여소군에게는 기회의 땅에서 일할 수 있다는 기쁨과 이교(장만옥)와의 만남남이 있기 때문이다.
우연히 알게 된 동향 출신의 이교에게 그는 왠지 모를 친밀감을 갖게 되다. 이교는 부자가 되겠다는 꿈을 가지고 홍콩에서 밤낮으로 악착같이 일한다. 둘은 낯선 땅에서 서로에게 의지하게 되고 둘 사이에는 우정과 사랑 사이의 미묘한 감정이 싹튼다.

달콤쌉쌀한 도시, 홍콩
영화 ‘첨밀밀’의 삽입곡이자 대만 가수 등려군의 노래 ‘첨밀밀’은 이교와 여소군을 이어주는 중요한 역할을 한다. 이교와 여소군은 등려군의 노래를 좋아하는데, 등려군을 좋아한다는 것은 대륙인이라는 동질성을 나타낸다. 왜냐하면 등려군은 중국 대륙인들의 절대적인 사랑을 받던 가수이기 때문이다.

홍콩 최고 번화가인 켄튼 로드가를 달리는 여소군의 자전거 위에서 이교가 등려군의 첨밀밀을 부르는 순간은 팍팍하고 고된 이주노동자의 삶은 잠시 사라진다. 홍콩에서 성공하기 위해 여러 개의 직업을 가지고 일하던 이교는 그녀가 투자한 주식이 폭락하면서 빚더미 위에 앉는다.
결국 그녀는 빚을 갚기 위해 벌이가 좋은 마사지샵에서 일하게 된다. 그녀에게 이곳에서의 삶은 쓰기만 하고 점점 깊어져 가는 여소군과의 관계를 정리한다. 여소군에겐 본토에 약혼녀가 있고, 꿈을 안고 온 홍콩에서 모든 것을 잃은 이교의 삶은 불안하기만 하기 때문이다. 그녀는 말한다. “어디로 가야 할지 모르겠다.”

이방인의 도시, 뉴욕
서로 사랑하지만 결국 헤어진 이교와 여소군은 홍콩을 떠나 뉴욕까지 흘러 들어온다. 두 사람은 뉴욕의 같은 하늘 아래 살면서도 서로 만나지 못하고 몇 년을 보낸다. 그리고 어느 날 뉴욕의 차이나타운 거리의 전파상 앞에서 등려군의 죽음을 알리는 뉴스를 보던 이교는 바로 옆에 서 있는 여소군과 우연히 다시 만난다. 이렇게 두 사람은 결국 만나게 된다. 홍콩과 뉴욕을 유랑하던 이들은 결국 돌고 돌아 만나게 되는 것이다.
